IPL Betting Markets – Types of Betting Options Available in the IPL

IPL betting markets are the different betting options available for a match in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The most common bet type is prediction of which team will win. But IPL betting options include much more, such as team performance (runs, wickets, boundaries), player performance (runs, wickets, milestones), live moments that change ball-by-ball, etc. Our IPL betting guide goes into deeper detail on how you should plan your betting based on the odds.

T20 is short and very volatile. In a way, it is loaded with many “mini games” inside the match such as the powerplay, the middle overs squeeze, death overs, etc. A single match can often offer dozens of angles.

What are IPL Betting Markets?

A betting market is the specific question you are betting on. IPL matches have a wide variety of markets because T20 cricket creates lots of measurable outcomes in a short time. As a result, you have many types of IPL betting markets. We have a comprehensive guide on how IPL betting works and how to identify competitive odds.

Match Winner Betting

Match winner betting is the most basic IPL market: Team A vs Team B, pick who wins the match. It is the most popular because beginners can follow it without learning a lot.

The downside is you are betting on the entire match story. Toss, dew, pitch conditions, one bad over … it all counts. If you prefer simple betting, match winner is a natural starting point. But simple does not always mean easy.

Toss Winner & Qualification Markets

In toss winner, you bet on which captain wins the toss. It is literally betting on a coin flip.

Qualification markets are longer-term. In these, you are betting on whether a team will qualify for the playoffs or not. These markets are influenced by points table maths, net run rate, injuries, and schedule difficulty.

You must stay on top of team performance if you wish to participate in qualification IPL betting markets.

Tournament Outright Markets

Tournament outrights are bets on the eventual IPL champion. You place the bet early (or mid-season), then wait for the league stage, playoffs, and final to play out.

Generally, tournament outright cricket betting markets offer higher odds because the outcome is remarkably harder to predict and a lot can change over time. Dips, injuries, unfortunate streak of losses, it can all wreck a strong team’s path.

As a result of their long-term nature, the variance is also higher in these markets.

Match Result Betting Markets in IPL

Out of all the cricket betting markets in IPL, match result betting is the most popular. You simply predict outcomes that decide the match (or the season). These can be pre-match betting odds or live betting odds.

Some bookies will show it as a two-way market (Team A or Team B), while others might use a 1X2 format where “X” represents a tie/no result outcome.

There are also “season” versions in IPL match betting markets. You bet on the team to qualify/advance (making playoffs) and the team to win the tournament (outright champion).

But risks exist. Player performance can be hampered by injuries, and team form can slump mid-season.

Match Winner Betting

Team A vs Team B, pick who wins the match. Easy to follow and easy to settle.

But it is still high variance. IPL matches can swing on small moments (like a dropped catch or a dew-soaked ball). That is why, although you can call match winner betting very beginner-friendly, you cannot call it “safe” in terms of its outcome.

Toss Winner & Qualification Markets

As a coin flip, there is not much scope for analysis and thinking (compared to most other markets). That is why it is one of the quickest IPL betting markets.

Qualification markets ask whether a team will reach the playoffs. These bets feel solid because you can look at points, fixtures, and form. The closer you can analyse, the more rewarding your bets will be on qualification match odds.

Tournament Outright Markets

Tournament outrights are bets on the IPL champion. You back a team to win the title and wait for the full season to play out. These markets are long-term. And the trade-off is variance over time.

A team can start strong and collapse. A key player can miss matches. These outright bets suit patient bettors who prefer season-long angles over match-to-match volatility.

Player-Based IPL Betting Markets

Coming to the next most popular among IPL betting markets, player-based markets focus on individual performance and not the final result or team performance. In T20, this is a big opportunity sometimes, because a team can lose a match, but you can still get paid handsomely if you bet correctly on a particular player’s good performance.

Form and pitch conditions matter more than many people realise. For example:

  • A slow pitch can hamper a power hitter.
  • Dew on the field can make it harder for spinners to grip the ball.
  • A left-right batting combination can mess with a bowler’s line.
  • A team’s bowling depth can change who even gets overs in key phases.

For many, player-based bets are one of the most popular IPL betting markets because it gives them a lot of scope to maximise analysis and strategy and reduce the role of luck.

Top Batsman & Top Bowler Markets

Top batsman and top bowler markets are match-level “leaderboard” bets. You are picking the player who ends up scoring the most runs (top batsman) or taking the most wickets (top bowler) in the match, either for a team or overall, depending on the market.

Openers face more deliveries, so they often have the best top batsman profile. Middle-order batters can still win it, but they need either a collapse or a chase that runs deep. For bowlers, death overs create wicket chances, but they also come with punishment if execution is off.

Player Performance Markets

Instead of beating everyone else, you are betting on a line or a threshold: player to score over/under X runs, player to take over/under X wickets, or hit a milestone like 30+ runs, a fifty, or 2+ wickets.

These bets are more controlled because you are not competing against the whole player pool. Still, they are sensitive to batting position, overs allocation, and match context.

Player of the Match Betting

Player of the match betting is partly subjective. The award usually goes to someone who had the most “impact”, which sounds clear until you watch a batter score 45 off 20 and a bowler take 3/18 and wonder who the panel liked more.

That subjectivity increases risk compared to match winner or simple run lines. It is not impossible to predict, but it is quite hard to model.

Over-by-Over & Session Betting Markets

When you zoom in on very short chunks of an ongoing match, you identify a lot of opportunities to make predictions. These are over-by-over and session markets. There are many predictable pressure points in any IPL match. There are also a lot of clear “phases” in any match. That is why these markets are quite common in IPL betting.

Typical options include:

  • Runs in the next over
  • Runs in a set of overs
  • Session outcomes (like a phase total)
  • Powerplay runs/wickets
  • First-event markets (like first six or first wicket)

These markets give you ample opportunity to predict short-term outcomes. These bets are settled quickly, and you either win or lose pretty fast.

Over Runs & Session Betting

Over runs markets focus on a single over or a defined over range. For example, “runs in the 7th over”, “runs in the next over”, or “team to score over/under X runs between overs 11–15”.

The logic is simple: you are betting on a micro outcome, not the match.

Session betting is similar but framed as a phase result. A session might be a block of overs with its own total or a yes/no outcome (for example, whether a certain number of runs are scored in a phase).

There are three variables instrumental to these markets.

  1. Bowling match-ups
  2. Batting intent
  3. Current game situation

Powerplay Betting Markets

Powerplay markets focus on the first six overs, where fielding restrictions usually increase scoring and create more attacking shots. Common options include powerplay runs (over/under), powerplay wickets (over/under), or which team has the higher powerplay score.

The powerplay is a defined “phase” that often sets the match tone in T20. A fast start can force the bowling side into defensive plans early and a couple of early wickets can slow the innings and shift the expected total down.

Live Betting Markets During IPL Matches

When the innings is unfolding, the odds will update constantly based on the score, overs left, wickets in hand, and even what just happened on the last ball. This is live betting. It is fast and quite dynamic. Impulsive decisions can clean your bankroll in moments.

Because T20 cricket swings quickly, live odds can move hard and fast, often on a ball-by-ball basis.

What is Live Betting in IPL?

Live IPL betting or in-play betting is placing bets while the IPL match is already in progress. Instead of locking in odds before the toss and hoping the game follows your script, you are reacting to what is happening in real time.

Odds move during the match because the “likelihood” of outcomes changes with every over and sometimes every ball.

A team chasing 190 at 55/0 after six overs looks very different from 55/2, even though the score is the same. Wickets, required run rate, set batters, bowler quality, etc., all affect the pricing.

Common Live IPL Betting Markets

Live IPL markets usually focus on the next few minutes of action rather than the final result. Common examples include:

  • Next over runs: over/under a run line for the next over, or a range like 6-10, 11-15, 16+.
  • Next wicket: whether a wicket falls in the next over or within a set number of balls.
  • Team score ranges: predicted total runs in a band (for example, 160-169, 170-179, etc.), often updating through the innings.
  • Live match winner: re-priced constantly based on current position and chase pressure.
  • Live player lines: updated over/under runs or wickets based on how the innings is progressing.

Popular Special & Prop Betting Markets in IPL

Specials and prop markets (props) are the “side bets” of IPL betting. They do not always ask who wins. These markets focus on totals, milestones, and specific match events that feel easy to picture while you are watching.

You can also use these props to hedge against your main bets. In case of a loss of your main bet, you might be able to recover some money.

Team & Match Performance Props

Total match runs is one of the most common props. You are betting on whether the combined runs of both teams go over or under a line set by the bookmaker. It is influenced by pitch, weather, boundary size, etc.

Team milestones are similar but focused on one team: will they reach 150, 175, 200, or another threshold? These bets attract casual players because they are easy to track on the scoreboard and do not require picking a winner.

Boundary & Partnership Markets

Boundary markets include total sixes, total fours, or sometimes a combined “total boundaries” line. These bets are popular because boundaries are the moments everyone notices, even if they are half-watching the match.

They also feel intuitive. For example, we can expect more sixes on a small ground with big hitters and a dry pitch. But if the ground is bigger and the pitch is slower, then there will be fewer clean hits.

Partnership markets focus on the opening stand, such as over/under runs for the first wicket partnership. These are good for casual bettors because the first few overs are easy to follow and the bet usually settles early.

Pre-Match vs. Live IPL Betting Markets

Match odds in IPL betting markets are of two types: pre-match and live. Pre-match bets are bets placed on events before the match begins. You use your knowledge, analysis, past track record, etc., to predict outcomes. Live betting markets are for matches when they are in play.

The whole pre-match vs live betting markets in IPL is a big discussion to be had. But to summarise, if you are new, try to avoid riskier bets, whether they are pre-match or live betting ones.

You might think your hunch might be right for Bangalore to win the match (pre-match) or for RR’s Yashasvi Jaiswal to perform really well in the opening overs (live betting). But you can never be sure as a newcomer to IPL betting.

Pre-Match Betting Markets

Pre-match markets are available before the match begins, often even before the toss. You will see match winner, toss winner, team totals, player performance lines, top batsman/top bowler, and props like total sixes.

These bets are predictive by nature. You are building a view based on team news, venue patterns, expected conditions, etc. The trade-off here is the uncertainty. If the pitch plays differently than expected, or dew changes the chase, your “good logic” can still look bad in hindsight.

Live Betting Markets

Live markets open once the match is in play and adjust constantly. Match winner odds shift with every wicket and run rate change. Totals and team lines update as projections move. Micro markets like next over runs, next wicket, or partnership lines are live-only.

Live betting is reaction-based.

You are betting with information in front of you: who looks set, which bowler is struggling, how the pitch is behaving.

Are All IPL Betting Markets Legal in India?

The market type does not change the legal position. Betting on the match winner, total sixes, or the next over runs is still betting.

We have a detailed guide on IPL betting legality in India that includes information on how the latest 2025 Act that prohibits real-money gaming affects IPL betting.

Legal Status of IPL Betting Markets

IPL betting markets are not “legal” or “illegal” based on their type. A match winner bet, a player runs bet, and a powerplay total are all part of the same activity: betting on IPL outcomes for money. So changing the market does not change the legal question.

What changes the picture is location and enforcement.

State laws and state-level rules around betting and online money games play a major role in how legality is interpreted and applied. That is why it is more accurate to think in terms of “state-linked legal risk” rather than assuming one market is safer legally than another.

Skill vs. Chance Explanation

The skill vs chance argument matters in Indian legal discussions because courts have, in some contexts, treated games where skill dominates differently from pure chance gambling. That is why you see it mentioned around certain card games and some game formats that are structured around player decisions.

For example, for a very long period of time, rummy has not been considered gambling like poker, Teen Patti, or Andar Bahar, because it was deemed that there is a high degree of skill involved in it.

With IPL betting, the bettor can use knowledge, data, and match analysis, but they still do not control the match outcome. Because of that, it is not automatically treated as a clean “skill game” category.

That being said, it is easy to see that an argument can be made in favour of IPL betting (or T20 betting in general) having a lot more to do with skill than with luck.
