Afghanistan will start their campaign in the T20 World Cup 2026 with the 4th match against New Zealand in Chennai on February 8. Afghanistan is one of the teams that improved their game the quickest and started challenging all the top opponents. They have been performing consistently well in the last few World Cup seasons, reaching the next round every year since the T20 World Cup 2016. In the last edition, they proved all predictions wrong with outstanding performance and secured their place in the semi-finals.
Strength
1. Best Spin attack
Afghanistan’s spin attack is its biggest strength, especially in Indian subcontinent conditions. Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmed have proved themselves globally with their impressive performances. Apart from them, Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Mohammad Nabi will also add strength to the spin attack. But Noor Ahmed will be a big threat to the opponent, who is in great form. Noor knows about those Chennai conditions well. So, he will definitely want to take advantage of it.
2. In-form Top order
Afghanistan’s second biggest strength will be its top order. Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, Darwish Rasooli, and Sediqullah Atal have played well in crucial moments. They have consistently performed brilliantly and helped the team win. Moreover, Gurbaz will be the most experienced player with the most responsibilities and will have to take the responsibility of giving the team a good start and putting them in a strong position.

Weakness
1. Low-aggression middle-order
Afghanistan has some excellent experience in the middle order, but they can’t deliver an aggressive finish to them. In the middle order, they have T20 specialist players like Gulbadin Naib and Mohammad Nabi. But still, Afghanistan has struggled in the middle order. It collapsed under pressure after losing a few wickets in the top order. However, Darwish Rasooli from the top-middle order has doing some good work to hold the team at crucial moments. But he has generally lacked support from the other end.
2. Weak Fast bowling attack
Afghanistan has also consistently faced problems with its fast bowling. Overall, Afghanistan has two important fast bowlers, Fazalhaq Farooqi and Azmatullah Omarzai, but both have been seen conceding runs at an economy rate of around 10 in the death overs. Afghanistan have another medium-fast bowler, Ziaur Rahman, but he doesn’t have much experience in international cricket and has failed to bowl well in pressure situations.
Key Players to Watch Out For
Darwish Rasooli
Darwish Rasooli was the highest run-scorer in the recent three-match T20I series against the West Indies. Rasooli has scored 156 runs at an average of 52 and a strike rate of 150. He also scored two half-centuries in the series. Rasooli also played an innings of 84 against Scotland in the warm-up game, which reflects his excellent form.
Azmatullah Omarzai
Azmatullah Omarzai is an excellent T20 all-rounder on whom Afghanistan’s fast bowling and middle order will depend a lot. He has given brilliant performances many times and led the team to victory. In the 62 T20 matches, he has scored 719 runs and also taken 45 wickets as well.
Noor Ahmed
Noor Ahmed could prove to be the ‘X’ factor for the Afganistan in this tournament. He has taken 20 wickets in 24 T20 matches. Moreover, Noor has also taken 24 wickets in 14 matches for Chennai in IPL 2025. Afghanistan has to play two matches on Chennai’s home ground, due to which Noor Ahmad will definitely get the benefit of the conditions.

Chance of Winning the Title
Afghanistan’s best performance came at the T20 World Cup 2024, as they secured their first-ever semi-final spot. Therefore, they have considerable experience challenging top teams. However, Afghanistan is in a tough group as they will face top opponents like New Zealand and South Africa. There will be a significant challenge for Afghanistan in the group stage. Therefore, it is unlikely that they will be successful in winning the title under any circumstances.
Where will they finish?
Group D is going to be the toughest group of this tournament, which has three strong teams, but only two teams will be able to reach the next round. Therefore, the biggest challenge for Afghanistan can be seen in the group stage itself. If they are able to perform well in the pressure situation here, then they can definitely be seen playing in the semi-final once again.
