History Of Feroz Shah Kotla

Feroz Shah Kotla Ground is the second oldest Indian Cricket stadium next to Eden Gardens, Kolkata. The stadium is established in 1883 and called its name because of its location nearby Kotla fort, which is built by Sultan Feroz Shah Tughlaq. Recently the stadium is renamed as Arun Jaitley Stadium, in remembrance of former Finance Minister and former DDCA President Arun Jaitley. The seating capacity of Kotla includes 42000 cricket lovers and governed by Delhi and Districts Cricket Association (DDCA).

This vintage stadium is the home ground of Delhi Capitals (Delhi Daredevils) of IPL team and Delhi Ranji team. Kotla stadium recorded its first test series match in 1948-1949 between India and West Indies. The special cherishing events of this ground are in 1983 Sunil Gavaskar’s 29th century against long-standing record of Don Bradman’s 29 centuries, in 1999 Anil Kumble took away 10 wickets in an innings following Jim Laker, in 2005 Sachin Tendulkar beat the record of Gavaskar by achieving his 35th test century.

The four stands of Kotla is named after 4 prominent Indian players to felicitate their excellency – Bisan Singh Bedi- former Indian Captain, Mohinder Amarnath – former all-rounder, Gautam Gambhir – former opening batsman and Delhi Ranji player, Virat Kholi – Indian Captain. The dressing rooms of the ground have also been called after Raman Lamba and Prakash Bhandari.

The ground has undergone various reconstructions to meet the recent needs over years like modern sightscreens, new player pavilion, multi-level seating system and media centres. In December 2009, the ODI between Sri Lanka and India has been called off due to worsen ground pitch condition. That time the ground was declared unfit and dangerous because of uneven hectic bounces of the ball in the pitch. The match was called off when Sri Lanka has scored 83 runs for 5 out in order of player’s safety. ICC decided to ban Kotla for a period of 12 months and witnessed 4 games of ICC World Cup 2011 after coming back.

The best view in the ground of Kotla is entertained from North East and North West stands, East stand and West North stand are preferred to get balls and chance to see players in closer. South East stand is the one next to player’s dressing room, which paves the path to watch all players next to you and grab a moment with them and gives an awesome view of the ground, South stand surprises you by watching ex-player or famous commentators show just next to you. The commentary box is found on the second floor of the south stand.
