Wankhede stadium remains the home ground for Mumbai Indian Team of IPL and Mumbai Ranji Trophy team. This stadium has the proud of hosted prominent matches here. History Of Wankhede Stadium

Wankhede Stadium, the traditional one is located at the marine lines of the Mumbai. The stadium was built in 1975 and it is named after the BCCI president, Barrister Sheshrao Wankhede. This crowded stadium withholds the seating capacity of 33,108 spectators. In early years the seating capacity was approx 45,000 and has been downsized during renovation in 2011. Wankhede Stadium has been built as the Mumbai’s third Cricket ground following the Bombay Gymkhana and the Brabourne stadium.

Being a prime venue for matches, the first match was played on this ground is India Vs West Indies in January 1975. In early days only test matches are held all over and later the stadium started hosting One Day matches, Twenty 20 matches and other esteemed matches. It has hosted numerous matches of the ICC World Cup held in 1996 and 2011. The ends of the ground are referred to as Garware Pavilion end and Tata end.

The stands designed in Wankhede Stadium are named after the famous Mumbai cricketers – Sunil Gavaskar (east) stand, north stand, Vijay Merchant stands (west), Tendulkar stand, MCA stand, Vitthal Divecha stand, Garware stand and Grandstand. The Gates of Wankhede stadium are referred after Polly Umrigar and Vinoo Mankad. Even the player’s dressing room has been called a Vijay Manjrekar Dressing Room.

North stand is the iconic stand in Wankhede stadium, offers a 75-degree view with a long–offish point. Gavaskar stand is the one gives you best entertainment in the pocket-friendly budget. Divecha stand gives you the cow corner view of the match and occasion to catch the balls. The best view of the game will be viewed from the stands like North stand (Tata end), Grandstand or Pavilion stands as it is positioned behind the bowlers to get the complete scene. The next best view of this stadium remains the Garware pavilion and MCA pavilion stands located at the south end. The Divecha stand also gives you the better view of the ground when compared to another stand.
