Journey of Mumbai Indians in IPL
In 2008, Indiawin sports subsidiary Reliance Industries bought a 100% stake in Mumbai Indians. The franchise was sold by BCCI at a whopping $111.9 million. Reliance Industries has been the sole owner of the team since its inaugural year. To build their brand name and create a fan base, Mumbai Indians signed the G.O.A.T Sachin Tendulkar as their 1st player. Initially, despite having iconic players like Sachin, Mumbai Indians struggled to become champions. Mumbai Indians struggled to find their captain in the initial years of IPL. Their team started rising as successful and iconic after Rohit Sharma took Captaincy in 2013. This was also the same year when Mumbai Indians won their first title.
Their first IPL championship title came against CSK under Rohit Sharma’s leadership. Since then, Mumbai Indians have been a victorious franchise in the IPL. All 5 trophies have come to MI under the leadership of Rohit Sharma. With his tactics and resilience to lead the team, he is often termed as the soul of Mumbai Indians. The team started with the motto “Duniya Hila Denge Hum” and Later changed to “One Family”, which is known to be connected with fans and players rigorously.
The Highs
Mumbai Indians have earned all titles under Rohit Sharma, but their three titles came in 4 years when they emerged as the best team. After struggling to qualify for playoffs, Mumbai Indians pulled a miracle by reaching on top of the table as well as winners. Between 2017 and 2020, MI got the most IPL titles; 3 titles in 4 years.
The Lows
Mumbai Indians faced many challenges as a cricket team in the beginning. This was before Rohit Sharma emerged as an exemplary leader. However, they faced their most menacing phase in 2022. This season of the IPL match saw Mumbai Indians finish in 10th position for the first time. This season they were struggling in all aspects including batting, bowling, and during auction. Though they finished 7th in 2009 out of 8 teams, 10th position out of 10 teams is their lowest.
Season by Season Performance of Mumbai Indians
2008 – 6th Place
The first IPL season started with G.O.A.T Sachin Tendulkar as captain. Later, he was replaced by Harbhajan Singh due to a groin injury. Harbhajan also got banned due to slapping Sreesanth. However, the bad start didn’t stop there! After a terrible losing streak of 4 matches, MI could not qualify for the playoffs.
2009 – 7th Place
The team was looking good, however, they were too dependent on key players Sachin Tendulkar, JP Duminy, and debutant Malinga. In the same season, Shaun Pollock retired from the squad as a player and committed himself to MI as a coach. These ups and downs resulted in only 5 wins out of 14 in the league stage. Thus, Mumbai Indians ended in 7th position.
2010 – Runner Up
Similar to their last year, Mumbai Indians had Sachin Tendulkar as their star batter. Bowlers like Malinga and Harbhajan Singh performed exceptionally leading the team to the finals. However, they lost to their arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings; this was just the commencement of this iconic rivalry MI vs CSK, the “El-Clásico”.
2011 – 3rd Place
Mumbai Indians fell short against Royal Challengers Bangalore resulting in 3rd position. The team, despite putting their efforts into the tournament, couldn’t handle the storm of Chris Gayle in the playoffs. In this season, Mumbai Indians had Malinga as the purple cap holder and Sachin Tendulkar with his T20 century.
2012 – 4th Place
2012 was again their season of ups and downs when Mitchell Johnson missed the tournament. Sachin Tendulkar missed the season after stepping down from captaincy and facing injury. Harbhajan Singh took captaincy, but the team indeed ended up losing in the eliminator.
2013 – Champions (1st title)
The season that changed Mumbai Indians’ history was when Bumrah made his debut, Ricky Ponting took the captaincy and was later replaced by Rohit Sharma. Anil Kumble and John Wright took positions as coaches. Under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, the team led to their first IPL Title. However, after the title Sachin Tendulkar announced retirement.
2014 – 4th Place
IPL reached UAE, Mumbai Indians were performing poorly and lost the first 5 matches in the tournament. However, they managed to pull off a dramatic win by chasing 199 in 14.4 overs against Rajasthan Royals which led them to qualify for playoffs. They lost against CSK in the eliminator.
2015 – Champions (2nd title)
In 2015, Mumbai Indians started their tournament with inconsistency and low performance. With the help of Malinga, Mitchell McClenaghan, and Lendl Simmons, they managed to lead the team into finals. For the first time in the IPL MI vs CSK Final, they defeated Chennai Super Kings earning their second title.
2016 – 5th Place
The team went all out in the auction and spent huge amounts on sensational players like Jos Buttler and Tim Southee. However, it went down the hill as they couldn’t bring their performance to the match. This was also the first time the Mumbai Indians didn’t reach the playoffs after 2009.
2017 – Champions (3rd title)
Hardik Panday and Bumrah performed well in batting and bowling respectively. This year Mumbai Indians scored 223, their highest IPL match total against Kings XI. Mahela Jayawardene took the position of their coach. They won the title over the last ball against the Rising Pune supergiant.
2018 – 5th Place
Malinga took the position of bowling mentor and Suryakumar Yadav made a comeback after 6 seasons. This year was the year of comebacks and debuts for Mumbai Indians as a young lad Mayank Markande made a top performance. Despite performing, they ended up on the losing side in close matches.
2019 – Champions (4th title)
Mumbai Indians’ two openers Rohit Sharma and Quinton De Kock created a storm in the tournament with 400+ runs individually. Alzarri Joseph had the best figures in IPL 6 for 12 in a game. Bumrah and Malinga(surprisingly as players) contributed with 35 wickets leading to the championship.
2020 – Champions (5th title)
This year will be on top of the history of Mumbai Indians as they were dominant in all aspects. Moreover, the team broke the misconception of losing the title the year after winning. They won their consecutive title in a row under Rohit Sharma. Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Trent Boult’s performance was the highlight of the tournament.
2021 – 5th Place
Defending champions did not qualify for playoffs due to sudden change. The team failed to pull the same performance when the league was shifted to UAE. Thus, they ended up in 5th position despite a good start to the tournament.
2022 – 10th Place
By far the lowest phase of the franchise was seen in 2022 with only 4 wins and the poorest run rate. For the first time in their history, Mumbai Indians ended up last on the table. Their key players like Rohit Sharma, and Ishan Kishan didn’t perform while Suryakumar Yadav got injured. None of the other players from the team took charge to lead the team which exposed poor auction strategy.
2023 – 3rd Place
Despite winning only the first three games of the season and consequently losing the next, Mumbai Indians ended in third position. The franchise had a poor performance on the batting side when lead performers Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma were struggling to perform. But newcomers like Tilak Verma, Akash Madhwal, and Nehal Wadhera with Suryakumar Yadav and Cameron Green had a good time resulting in their third position.
