Note: Before its separation, Telangana was a part of Andhra Pradesh. So, when it was separated in 2014, the “Gaming Act” was basically copied for both states. Telangana made its amendments to prohibit gambling in 2017, and three years later, its sister state Andhra Pradesh also followed suit.

States with More Relaxed or Unclear Laws

Many other states have tried to ban gambling in one form or another. And time and again, they have been unable to do so because of various reasons (lack of political support, lobbying, etc.). There are three key states in this category:

  • Maharashtra: Way back in the 80s, Maharashtra already prohibited all gaming, which it defined as “wagering or betting” except for licensed horse race betting.
