Sri Lanka will start their campaign in the T20 World Cup 2026 with the 6th match against Ireland in Colombo on February 8. Their performance was brilliant in the T20 World Cup in the initial years. But after becoming the champion in 2014, they didn’t perform well in any edition. In the last tournament, Sri Lanka was eliminated from the group stage. However, this time, Sri Lanka is the co-host of the T20 World Cup 2026, and it is expected that they will perform well in their home conditions.
Strength
1. Balanced Squad with Domination spin attack
Sri Lanka has a very balanced squad as they have good batters in the top order and a very experienced middle order as well. Kamil Mishara and Pathum Nissanka have been doing well for the team consistently. While Dhananjaya de Silva, Charith Asalanka and Dasun Shanaka will be there to support the middle order. Moreover, their spin attack is expected to be the strongest among the teams. It can prove to be very difficult for any team to face them. Sri Lanka has a trio of Wanindu Hasaranga, Mahesh Theekshana and Dunith Wellage in the squad for the spin attack.
2. Home Advantage
Sri Lanka is the co-host of the T20 World Cup 2026. They have to play all the matches at their home venue, and their players have good knowledge about the conditions. The performance of Sri Lankan players in their home conditions has always been excellent, which can definitely benefit them in the tournament.

Weakness
1. Poor recent Performance
Sri Lanka’s recent form at home is very disappointing. They failed to win the T20 series against Pakistan, and also lost the T20 series by 3-0 against England. This shows that the Sri Lankan players have failed to use the home conditions. Therefore, their poor performance needs to improve if they want to do well in this edition.
2. Inconsistent batting line-up
Sri Lanka has failed to perform as a unit, which could prove to be a weakness for them. While their top order gives the team a good start, the middle order fails to deliver a good finish. This resulted in losing the games for Sri Lanka. Moreover, it seems very difficult for the middle order to handle the team if top order flops. Their entire batting lineup needs to perform well.
Key Players to Watch Out For
Pathum Nissanka
Pathum Nissanka is a good top-order batsman. He has played 84 T20 matches, scoring 2437 runs at an average of 30.80. This time in the tournament, he will be responsible for giving Sri Lanka a good start from the top order.
Wanindu Hasaranga
Wanindu Hasaranga is one of the best T20 bowlers. His leg-spin bowling created problems for the batters. Hasaranga will prove to be more dangerous in this tournament as he will get to play on the spinning surface. Moreover, Hasaranga has taken 151 wickets in 94 matches. He has won many important matches for the team with his bat as well.
Kusal Mendis
Kusal Mendis has recently performed well in the recent 3-match T20 series against England. He was the highest run scorer in the series. Mendis scored 95 runs in three matches at an average of 31.66, and his strike rate was above 150. Definitely he is a big threat to any team in their home conditions.

Chance of Winning the Title
Sri Lanka is in Group B of the T20 World Cup 2026; their opponents will be Australia, Ireland, Oman, and Zimbabwe. Apart from Australia, the remaining teams appear slightly weaker than Sri Lanka. Although Zimbabwe has the potential to upset Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka will still have a good chance to perform well in this tournament. But considering the recent poor performance of the team, their chances of winning the title seem very minimal.

Where will they finish?
Looking at Sri Lanka’s group, it seems that they will easily reach the second round of the tournament. However, if they are upset by any team, Sri Lanka can be eliminated from the group stage itself. Looking at their recent poor form, it seems unlikely that Sri Lanka will be able to progress beyond the Super Eight.
