Journey of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG)
Right before the beginning of the IPL’s 2022 version, the officials announced the introduction of two new teams in the Indian Premier League. The base price for the team was high, leading to a lesser number of bidders. Consequently, in the mega auction, this team was purchased by the RPSG Group (by Sanjeev Goenka) at a price of INR 7,090 crores. This is the same enterprise that owned the franchise Rising Pune Supergiant between the 2016-2017 tenure.
KL Rahul was appointed the role of the captain of the Lucknow Super Giants. Andy Flower and Gautam Gambhir filled the roles of the head coach and the team mentor respectively. Ahead of the 2024 year’s season, Gautam Gambhir has joined back KKR, whereas, the head coach is Justin Langer, assisted by Sridharan Sriram. Over the years, some of the prominent players in this team have been: KL Rahul, Quinton de Kock, Avesh Kumar, and Nicholas Pooran.
The Highs
The Lucknow Super Giants have an impeccable win percentage record of 100% against 3 teams, namely the Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Sunrisers Hyderabad. Moreover, out of the 4 instances where they played against the 5-time champions, Mumbai Indians, they have won thrice. This franchise has played only in 2 IPL seasons, but they have made it to the playoffs both times and finished the tournament being one of the top 4 teams in both 2022 and 2023.
The Lows
Despite their amazing win percentage and incredible performance in both seasons of the Indian Premier League, the LSG has not won a single trophy. Moreover, due to the Virat Kohli vs Naveen ul Haq fight, there was a constant stir on the internet about this team. The 16th season of the IPL also saw an injured KL Rahul, which went against the team’s winning efforts. Now, with a better sense of direction, the team must be looking forward to clinching the championship.
LSG Season by Season Performance
IPL 2023 – 4th Position
In 2023, LSG again reached the playoffs with 8 out of 14 wins. History repeated itself, and Mumbai Indians won the Eliminator in this season. Kyle Mayers, Marcus Stoinis, and Nicholas Pooran arose as the heroes, along with Naveen-ul-Haq. This is also the season when the Virat Kohli vs Naveen ul Haq fight fight occurred, which was later resolved in the India vs Afghanistan World Cup match.
IPL 2022 – 4th Position
In their first-ever IPL season, the Lucknow Super Giants lost only 5 out of their 14 matches and were qualified for the playoffs. KL Rahul, Deepak Hooda, and Quinton de Kock were the stars of this season. However, the Royal Challengers Bangalore knocked them out in the Eliminator match, thereby pushing them away from the IPL title. This is where the LSG vs RCB rivalry found its roots.
