Kings XI Punjab, participating since the inaugural IPL season in 2008, is owned by a consortium of famous personalities including Preity Zinta, Karan Paul, Ness Wadia, and Mohit Burman. Despite reaching the IPL finals only once, the team underwent a rebranding effort in the 2021 IPL, changing its name to Punjab Kings (PBKS). The franchise was embroiled in a controversy involving Lalit Modi in 2010, which resulted in a brief expulsion by the BCCI. However, Punjab Kings has consistently provided a platform for young players to showcase their talents.

Journey of Punjab Kings
The initial start of PBKS has been very favorable. The Kings XI Punjab made headlines during their first few seasons but their journey wasn’t easy. Kings XI Punjab in 2010 made headlines along with Rajasthan royals due to their ownership issue. This led to the dismissal of the PBKS. However, the team was determined to remain in the IPL and took a legal course to gain justice. The team got its original position but the controversies and court matters took a dramatic turn and reduced the team’s momentum. In 2014 PBKs got a good team they wished for. The team tried everything to win the league but they lost momentum at later stages of the league.
The Highs
The initial year of 2008 was a good start for the team, the team finished in third position. However, after the controversies 2014 was a renewal phase for PBKS. Kings XI Punjab 2014 captained by Bailey led the team to a better position. The captain proved to be a better leader for the team but the team couldn’t qualify this year. However, PBKS was higher ranked in 2014 but couldn’t achieve victory in the final. 2019 onwards PBKS had a good start but the losses in essential matches kept them behind in the game.
The Lows
Few years Such as 2010, 2015, 2016, and majorly 2023 were the rugged seasons for PBKS. Kings XI Punjab had many good seasons during the IPL. Their journey has been unpredictable. The players however had played passionately to win the game but the team collaboration wasn’t as expected as fans thought.
PBKS – Season by Season Performance
2008- Third position
The first IPL season of Kings XI Punjab started well with good team players and their excellent gameplay which led the team to the semifinals. Shaun was one of the major players during their first IPL season in 2008. Punjab won 11 matches this season. But the PBKS lost the qualifying match to CSK and lost the battle to win the title. Shaun, the cornerstone player of Kings XI Punjab won the Orange Cap title as well, grabbing positive attention towards the team.
2009- Fifth Position
Punjab Kings (PBKS) secured a new sponsor, Emirates. Fans had high expectations due to the team’s previous IPL performance. However, several setbacks hampered their performance. Many of their top Australian players were unavailable, and their key pace bowler, Jerome Taylor, suffered an injury that forced him to withdraw from the season. The KXIP vs. KKR match proved to be a significant blow to the team’s confidence, as Punjab lost by a large margin.
2010- Eighth Position
This year was a controversial year for PBKS, the team faced various Challenges but players worked their best to maintain the momentum. However, PBKS lost matches against Royal Challenger Bangalore, Delhi Daredevils, and Deccan Chargers. KXIP vs CSK 2010 the team managed to win against Chennai and get the pace in the game. However, that didn’t help much and the team lagged behind and finished at eighth spot.
2011-Fifth Position
2011 started I. good pace with PBKS getting Adam Gilchrist as their team captain. The team also got Michael Bevan as their coach. Kings XI Punjab played at a good pace initially but the team missed the playoff by a mere two points. Marsh remained constantly brilliant in his game and led the team ahead. However, PBKS failed to cross the playoffs and finished in fifth position.
2012- Sixth Position
This season the bowlers outshined the batsman of the team. bowling was the main charm of the PBKS team in 2012. Howberr Mandeep Singh was the high scorer of PBKS. PBKS was close to the team that secured fifth and fourth positions. PBKS won a total of eight matches in 2012 and finished in the Sixth spot.
2013- Sixth Position
This season saw the highest scorer David Miller who created a 38-ball century against RCB. The tournament started with a greater pace for the team. A promising player Adam Gilchrist who was the former captain of the team declared his retirement after this season. The PBKS had a middling journey where they won and lost an equal number of matches.
2014- Runner up
This season was one the most promising ones for Punjab Kings. Maxwell and Miller took the Kings XI Punjab 2014 ahead with their great batting. Sehwag hit an essential century in the IPL second qualifier. Young player Manan Vohra helped in middle-order batting and led the team to finals this year. The final KXIP vs KKR match was intense and eventually, Punjab couldn’t win this time.
2015- Eighth Position
George Bailey remained the captain of the PBKS in 2015. The PBKS didn’t perform up to the fans’ expectations. Punjab couldn’t win more than 3 matches in total and finished the game in eighth spot. This season was one of the roughest seasons for Punjab kings.
2016- Eighth Position
The team had good momentum initially. The team was captained by David Miller in the initial few matches in 2016. Later the team captain was changed to Murali Vijay. Again this year Punjab could only bag 3 victories out of all the matches, keeping them last in the table this year.
2017- Fifth Position
The team decided to work on the captaincy and David Miller was given the leadership for the 2017 season. This PBKS got a good inning initially and reached the playoff round. However, PBKS was defeated by Rising Pune Supergiants, lost the battle again and finished the game in fifth position.
2018- Seventh Position
PBKS again underwent major team changes in the 2018 auction. The captain for this year was Ashwin who led the team this year but could make much more difference than last year. Punjab Kings expressed immense passion in gameplay and won five initial matches in a row. However, they could have led much longer and finished the game in seventh spot.
2019- Sixth Position
KL Rahul led the team ahead in many matches with his high runs. This year’s team was ambitious to get a better position in the league. PBKS had many high-performing players such as KL Rahul, Mohammad Shami, and Ashwin but the players were consistent enough to keep the moment of their journey going. This year the team fished at Sixth position.
2020- Sixth Position
In the first half of the 2020 IPL season Punjab Kings could only win one match. The first win this season was against RCB but after that, PBKS had to bear back-to-back losses; their loss-taking track was broken by their next victory against Bangalore. Despite having various performing players Punjab could not pull off the show they should have. This season Punjab won Six matches in total.
2021- Sixth Position
3 times in a row Punjab Kings finished the IPL at sixth spot. The openers did a great job in scoring good runs but the other team members were not consistent throughout the journey. The team had to adopt better strategies to win but eventually failed to do so.
2022- Sixth Position
PBKS got good players in the team in the 2022 auction, their major attraction was Shikhar Dhawan. Punjab had many batsmen and top run scorers who could lead the team far but the Punjab Kings couldn’t unlock the potential of their talented batsman. Once again the team finished the game in Sixth spot on the table.
2023- Eighth Position
Although their eighth position suggests their poor performance that wasn’t the case this season. PBKS missed the game with Jonny Bairstow’s injury. Similarly, Liam Livingstone couldn’t perform to his full potential due to fitness limitations. PBKS’s uncapped batsman Jitesh and Prabh Simran tried their skills but the team eventually finished at eighth spot.
