Journey of SRH
As mentioned, Sunrisers Hyderabad was Deccan Chargers chargers up till 2013. They were a Hyderabad-based franchise that started in 2008. They won the IPL Cup in 2009. Adam Gilchrist led them. But in 2013, the team’s ownership changed due to money issues. However, it didn’t disrupt the team. The new owners kept the same 20 players. They were part of Deccan Chargers. The captain of Deccan Chargers, Kumar Sangakkara, was also retained by SRH. The players could not create a stronger performance in the initial years. Creating a core was essential, but it was a bit difficult. They tried with four captains in the first two years of their campaign.
In 2015, they shaped their identity by appointing David Warner as their captain. They did quite well, ending 6th. But in 2016, they were the stars! They even took home the IPL trophy. One of the top players for the franchise in 2016 was David Warner. He had the second-highest runs among all teams next to Virat Kohli. The bowlers also took many wickets in the season. They proved important to the team. They defeated the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2016 final.
The Highs
Hyderabad’s top-notch performance was in 2016. They finished third on the points table. They had to win two consecutive matches to qualify for the finals. SRH had a great performance in the two knockout matches, and in the final match, they went on to beat the mighty RCB. It was the best performance for SRH and their captain, David Warner.
In 2018, their captain, Warner, was absent. This was due to the ball tampering incident. Kane Williamson led the team. They also had a great campaign in 2018. Williamson was the highest run scorer among all teams. They qualified for the finals in 2018 but just missed the beat as they lost against the Chennai Super Kings. Shane Watson got a great 100 for CSK in the finals, which was the reason for the loss of Hyderabad.
The Lows
After the team’s new formation in 2013, it was difficult for the team to path away up till 2014. After 2015, they gave decent performances and regularly qualified for the players. Their performance started deteriorating in 2021 when Captain Warner started having issues with the management. They finished last in 2021. Consecutively, in 2022, they were also in the eighth spot. In 2023, they were also at the bottom of the table.
